Why we fail to learn from failure.

We have all been brought up hearing proverbs similar to ‘Failure is a stepping stone to success”. In spite of hearing and observing people who have turned failure into raging success most of us are either thoroughly demoralized by our failures or continue on the same path to failure.

It is not that we do not have the faculties or the capacity to learn from them; otherwise, we would not have learned to ride a cycle or drive a car. It is just that we do not have the will to apply ourselves. We are disinclined to learn from our failures and even if we learn something new, we are mentally lazy to apply it to our future ventures. Hence, we repeat them again and fail only to blame it on fate, luck, or whatever.

Remember what Moshe Arens said, “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently." So we should learn from our failures and determinedly apply the lessons learnt from it and become a success.

A bad time to look for jobs?

US Whig poster showing unemployment in 1837Image via WikipediaThanks to the rising oil prices, the economy in general is on an inflationary trend. Historically people tend to cut costs during inflation.
The same applies for organizations. They look to bring down expenses either by job cuts or by freezing recruitment.
Unfortunately, we may get caught in the middle. Either we will fall prey to a job cut or e forced to remain unemployed for a longer period.
To escape this fate, we have to be sharp enough to know how our present employer and the sector will react to these trends.
If the industry itself is sinking, it is better to bail - out at the earliest and find a job before there is a mad rush.
Similarly, if signs portend that the industry and your company is well placed, then it is better to ride it out.

“The modern PA is far removed from the traditional office secretary of the past who was expected to ‘take a letter’ and remain in the background,” says Claire Lister, managing director of Pitman Training, the UK’s leading IT and office skills training company.

“The responsibilities of today’s professional PA are wide-ranging and extremely demanding,” Claire continues. “From HR and marketing to accounts and event management – the majority of senior managers admit that they rely heavily on the contribution of their PA.”

Treasure in waste tires

The Sentinel Online : Business:

"waste tires have undergone transformation from trash to treasure in a burgeoning industry that collects, processes and sells tire rubber.

Last year, 300 million tires were discarded — about one per American — and 261 million of those were recycled. Most of the 39 million or so tires not recycled were processed for landfill disposal."

Poll: Women hold senior positions

"Ninety-one percent of companies on the Chinese mainland have women holding senior management positions, ranking second in the world, after the Philippines, according to the results of a survey released yesterday.

The poll, conducted by Grant Thornton, an accounting firm based in Hong Kong, covered 32 economies.

Hong Kong and Taiwan also rank high on the list, with 83 percent and 80 percent of their firms having women in senior positions.

In the Philippines, 97 percent companies have women holding senior positions."

Employees are a business's cheapest asset.

Employees are a business's cheapest asset.

Great article which argues that in the private sector employees are not an organisations greatest asset. In fact it is the cheapest.

It also argues that if HR continues to propagate that employees are an organisations greatest asset, it is never going to be taken seriously and will not be able to exert influence on those in power.
