Have you ever learnt anything from others?

If not, it is high time you did.

Learning from others is one of the short cuts to personal development, because the more you observe others, how they achieved their success or learnt what caused their failure, it will give you the necessary insight to know your own predilections and correct them.

It was Carl Jung who said “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.” Even though this quote may elicit a laugh first, when you understand what exactly he means you will understand why you need to learn from others.

So, go ahead, stop being inward focused and start observing others, it is certain to lead to personal development.

Look inside you

The more I read, contemplate or study about personal development, I am convinced that the tools for personal development are nothing but variations or methods to examine yourself.

Stop looking at yourself as you want others to look at you. Learn to look at yourself as others see you, accept yourself with warts and all.

Then you are on your way to self- improvement.

Do not ignore your strengths.

In our bid for self-improvement, we focus on our weakness and fail to nurture our strengths. As Lorraine Pirihi, Australia’s No. 1 Productivity Coach, points out, “we all have talents that we often overlook. "

In other words, we must use our strengths to the maximum.

Understanding others using ‘tennis psychology’.

A game of tennis provides ample lessons in human nature. (For that matter, most games help us understand human nature.)

Kim and Charles Petty tell us “Tennis psychology is nothing more than understanding the workings of your opponent’s mind, and gauging the effect of your own game on his mental viewpoint, and understanding the mental effects resulting from the various external causes on your own mind”. (You can read the complete article here.)

Tennis is eminently suited for the study of human nature as it involves two individuals. Can you think of any other game that helps understand human nature better?

Does your planning have a purpose?

Most times we plan, work on our to do lists without taking into account our larger goals.

Unfortunately, we fail to understand that our do lists are just a method of charting our activities.Stop and think and plan with a purpose in mind.

For ideally a plan should aid our growth, should help us narrow our focus and should strengthen our core competencies.
